As I delve deeper into this emerging industry I find out more from some of the more experienced players and the most successful have one thing in common. When looking to buy a website to flip, Increase the size of your net!
So what does this poor fishing metaphor really mean? It is referring to not limiting your search for a website to only one source. There are more and more places to find websites to buy coming online everyday. The first thing you should do in your search is look everywhere and not limit yourself to one marketplace. Search all the marketplaces, forums, blogs and ebay to maximise your chances to find a website to buy.
Well that seems relatively obvious I know. But that is not the tip that could double your website flipping profits.
Well then, what is the tip?
Just because a website isn’t listed on one of the marketplaces doesn’t mean it is not for sale. After all every one has their price. The most untapped resource to buy quality sites cheap is by contacting the website owner and merely asking.
So how do I find a site worth buying?
I can’t answer this one for you. I would suggest doing searches on terms that you understand and enjoy. So if you like ice hockey put a search in google and then search through the results. One trick I like to employ is to look through directories (particularly slowly updated, human edited directories) to find old websites that are in your area of expertise. Also make sure when surfing the web to keep an eye out on the websites you look through everyday and you may notice a site that could be a potential investment.
So what am I looking for exactly?
Again I can only provide guidelines. You want what I call two distinguishable features. These can be something original the website contains or some benefit that will save you time when enhancing the website for sale. So what’s the point?
The point is that your potential market to buy a website from goes from a couple of thousand listings to millions. You will be able to find a website that better suits your abilities and you can also score some great bargains. Many website owners who have not made money from their site will jump at getting an offer for their site way below the market value.

I agree - I have found most of my best and most profitable flips by searching within a niche I am interested in and then picking up a site that has PR, some SEO and can use an overhaul - just by approaching the owner directly you can often get great deals because they are not doing anything with the site anymore and will take a decent offer. Then you can redesign it, optimize it and add monetization elements like adsense, affiliate program , paid links, banner ads etc

Totally Agree Ebay is by far one of the most untapped resources for finding a bargain. Mainly because each bargain is hidden inside a thousand rip offs.
