Now I know you are looking to make money. And the faster and easier it is the better for you. But like the tech bubble of the late 90’s are your websites creating real value?

Recent business activities led me to the development of a new business theory in terms of website flipping. Most people will not like it or agree with it but I feel this is a fundamental theory to building lasting, sustainable success. As I was “doing a flip” and adding value to my site I asked myself the question, “Am I adding real value to the site, or short term value specifically for the flip?” The answer was unfortunately yes and no.

I realized on an ethical level any value I add that is not perceived as “real” value by experienced webmasters was basically a scam to take money from the uneducated. I also realized that by not adding real value I will always be selling sites for three or four figures instead of selling quality five figure sites.

So what do I mean by real value? Essentially it is work you put into the site that you would do if the site was your own and you did not plan to sell. So instead of just adding content to build up the size of your site, you should add unique content that appeals to your target market. Instead of a few meaningless links for traffic, you should actively promote your site on related blogs and forums to get targeted traffic. I think you can see where this is going. 

Now the downside of this is more work and more time between flips. However there are many potential benefits. Astute buyers for instance can easily spot a flip from a genuine site and will be more likely to pay a higher amount. Also if your building techniques were successful you may have a money-maker on your hands that would be worth keeping. Its easier to work on one big flip than a dozen small ones and it feels better selling quality over junk.

So on your next flip think about how you can add real value to your site. Value that will not disappear immediately, value that will generate real opportunities for the site and value that will let you sleep better at night.
